on babies and birthdays

Birthdays are a big deal to me. A chance to celebrate, to enjoy a dessert (or two), to pop a bottle of champagne, and to treat yourself to something you normally wouldn’t…

yessiree I can get on board with that!

But this year, my birthday [which just so happens to be today] has taken on a new meaning to me. As my closest friends have welcomed new babies into their lives, I’ve come to realize just how much birthdays mean to Mommies and Daddies and not to just the one being honored. That the miracle of a child takes on a whole different celebration and is so much more than just blowing out candles on a cake.

And so this year, I’m sure I’ll wish for many things. For patience, for kindness, for organization, for motivation…

and that one day I’m able to celebrate the same joy that my parents knew 29 years ago today.
