For those that don’t know— I was a Sales Manager at Nordstrom for 5 years before I left to explore other career opportunities. I loved working there. I loved my customers [waves hello to Taylor D] that eventually became more like family. I loved learning new product and working with my buying team to find new, exciting brands to carry on my floor. I loved merchandising my floor and watching my employees get excited over the new things they had to sell.
Needless to say, over those 5 years I’ve managed to pick up a few tricks when it comes to shopping. Y’all want in on a few of them? Come close and I’ll share my trade secrets…
- learn when your favorite retailers do markdowns. I’ve gotten some of the best deals because I know when Anthro and J.Crew slash the prices on their merchandise.
- shop online- but call the direct store for your merchandise. I found a dress I had been eyeing for a month online @ Madewell. instead of ordering online (and having to pay shipping, duh) I called the local store directly, they matched the online price, and shipped me my dress for FREE. total savings? $71. HOLLA!
- speaking of buying from the store directly- you know that your sale then counts toward their budget and bottom line for the month? if you are a good customer they will be MORE than happy to go above and beyond for anything you need. especially shops with customer service built into their mission statement (Nordstrom, Madewell [see photo]).
- find a sales person you LOVE at the places you frequent. be nice to them. tell them about the brand, styles, pieces you love. have them call you when things go on sale.
- try things on. I shop in the store and then stalk online- I HATE spending full price on something if I know it’s going to be marked down in 4 days [I see you over there, Gap].
- sign up for any and all marketing emails using a junk email account. that way you aren’t trying to sift through sales to get to the important stuff- it’s all in one place when you’re ready for it. related- Anthro is offering free shipping today with code STAYPUT.
So,there you have it. Do y’all have any strategic shopping tips you’d like to share?

Great tips! I also have found that places that get shipments daily (Hello, Lululemon) will pull stuff for you before it even hits the floor.

if you are shopping designer, be smart about it- check The Outnet, check upcoming sales on Gilt, etc., and eBay.
